OVERLAND PARK, Kan. –(Business Wire)–

To ensure the future availability of new IP addresses for its customers, Sprint (News – Alert) (NYSE: S) has completed the first phase of IPv6 deployment for large businesses and wholesale partners that use its domestic Internet backbone. Additional deployment phases will continue through 2010 and by the end of this year, Sprint plans to roll out IPv6 support to its remaining domestic sites and international Internet backbone, including points of presence in the Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. This will give Sprint global businesses and wholesale partners the benefits of IPv6 services on SprintLink Dedicated Internet Access service.

IP is the basis of all Internet communications, connecting billions of devices via unique addresses available through the current protocol, IPv4. However, the dramatic increase in the size of the Internet and in the number of devices accessing it is driving the need for many more IP addresses. Industry experts predict that the pool of available IPv4 addresses will be depleted over the next 12 to 18 months. IPv6 is the Internet community’s solution for this issue, increasing the address space from 32 bits in IPv4 to 128 bits in IPv6. This allows for trillions of addresses, enough to accommodate the future needs of every person on the planet.

Sprint IPv6 deployment is a vital step which ensures smooth transition to the new protocol for customers whose critical content and applications rely on Sprint’s converged IP backbone. To aid in that transition, Sprint is implementing IPv6 support using a native dual-stack solution, which allows IPv6 to coexist with customers’ IPv4 network. This approach requires no changes to customers’ network design, easing deployment, troubleshooting, and management of the new IPv6 protocol.

“IP is the glue that allows us to integrate services effectively between wired and wireless, mobile and fixed,” said Iyad Tarazi, vice president of Network Development and Engineering, Sprint. “We want to make sure that Sprint’s networks are ready to meet business and wholesale partner needs, and we believe that IPv6 capabilities will be crucial to keep the momentum of innovative new services flowing on the Internet as we approach IPv4 exhaustion.”

The next phase will extend IPv6 support to Sprint’s Global MPLS Layer3 VPN network, currently planned for 2011, and finally to the wireless network, in early 2012. Sprint has offered IPv6 services on its Peerless IP network since 2007.

Sprint has been a pioneer in the IPv6 evolution, actively involved in the standardization, testing, and deployment of IPv6 since 1997. An early adopter of IPv6 in an experimental capacity, Sprint supports a test-bed network to gain experience with the protocol and to offer service to early adopters. The most up-to-date information about Sprint’s ongoing IPv6 rollout is available at http://www.sprintv6.net.

Sprint delivers wireless, wireline and converged solutions through its Business Markets Group (BMG). BMG is a provider of end-to-end solutions, mobile broadband and M2M capabilities for enterprise, small and medium-sized business and public sector customers. Sprint continues to build on its expansive solutions portfolio, which is supported by 3G and 4G mobile broadband, a Cisco (News – Alert) Powered Tier 1 global IP network and a growing ecosystem of M2M partners.

VOIP is a technology that allows us to place telephone calls without a telephone. Instead, with VOIP, you can call anyone anywhere in the world with simply your broadband internet connection.

Essentially, with VOIP, analog signals like those of the voice are converted into digital signals that are then sent over the internet and converted back.

Not all VOIP services are built alike. Some allow you to call anyone with a phone, while others restrict your calls to only other clients using the same VOIP service. You can choose between three different ways to set up a VOIP system on your computer.

You can use an ATA (analog voice adaptor) which performs the analog-to-digital conversion, and is plugged in to your computer at one end and your telephone at the other.

You can use an IP phone, a phone specifically made for use with VOIP. While the IP phone looks exactly like a normal phone, it’s got special Ethernet connectors that allow it to be plugged into your router. They’re even working on WIFI phones for VOIP that you can take with you to the various internet hotspots popping up all over the world.

Finally, you can make VOIP contact with your computer alone. Simply install the VOIP software, make sure you’ve got a microphone, speakers, an internet connection (high-speed is best, of course), and a sound card, and chat away.

One thing many VOIP-users love about it is the cost, or more accurately, the savings. By using VOIP you save yourself one unnecessary bill per month – your phone bill. VOIP charges, much cheaper usually than most people’s phone bills, appear on your regular broadband bill.

Just like cell-phones, VOIP service is portable, at least as portable as your laptop. You no longer have to worry about shoddy cell phone coverage when you go away. As long as you can get internet access, you’ll be able to use your VOIP.

A few disadvantages of VOIP to consider, however: VOIP may not respond well during power outages and problems with your server. If your internet connection for any reason goes out, so does your ability to place VOIP-facilitated phone calls.

When researching possible VOIP providers, keep in mind that not all of them let you make 9-1-1 or directory assistance calls. If you depend on services like these for simple peace of mind, make sure you find a VOIP provider that can accommodate.

It’s a little known fact that many of the major telephone companies use VOIP technology already to be more efficient. So, unbeknownst to you, you may very well have already been making VOIP-enabled phone calls.

VOIP providers now compete to offer subscribers many of the same services we’re used to getting from our telephone companies, such as call waiting, repeat dialing, return dialing, and three-way calling. You can also find VOIP providers that offer to filter your calls, giving you a range of options of what to do with calls sent from numbers you select.

Maybe you send the call to your voice mail, maybe the caller hears a message informing them that your phone number is no longer in service. You can even use VOIP to check your voicemail and send voice message as attachments to emails.

VOIP is only just revving up it’s engines. It may not be long before every household in your neighborhood is VOIP-enabled.

David Hill, Chairman of Cloud Net believes that his company can offer small businesses a robust alternative to BT so that companies can avoid being reliant on the telecoms giant and its thousands of unhappy workers.

YOQNE’AM, Israel –(Business Wire)–

Wavion™, a technology leader in Metro and Rural Wi-Fi with a new generation of Wi-Fi Base Stations, Airoma, a wireless hardware distribution company in New Zealand, and EOL, a leading Internet Service Provider in New Zealand, announced today the deployment of Wavion’s Wi-Fi solution for high speed Internet access in Tauranga, New Zealand’s Fastest Growing City.

The deployment is based on Wavion’s WBS-2400 and WBS-5800 base stations, working, accordingly, in 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz unlicensed band, in conjunction with off-the-shelf standard Wi-Fi client devices. The network covers over 1,400 square kilometers and serves both urban and rural customers in the Bay of Plenty region in New Zealand, providing both fixed and roaming VoIP and Internet access services.

“As an award winning wireless ISP, we owe much of our recent success to the use of Wavion’s Technology in our network,” said Terry Coles, EOL co-founder. “We have just upgraded part of our network from conventional Wi-Fi access points to WBS-2400 base stations. This has significantly increased performance and reliability, way beyond our expectations. Moreover, it has greatly reduced the number of access points required to cover our target area. We are very pleased with the outcome.”

Wavion’s Carrier Grade, unique and powerful WBS-2400 and WBS-5800 spatially adaptive beamforming base stations, provide extended range, higher throughput, and NLOS coverage. As a result, unlike more conventional equipment, it does not require costly high towers and can be easily installed on poles and yet provide the widest homogeneous coverage and Indoor penetration. Moreover, the flexible architecture and ruggedized and weather-proof enclosure add significantly to the unique value offerin for Telecom Operators.

“Wavion is proud to partner with Airoma and EOL in this project in New Zealand,” said Tal Meirzon, Wavion’s CEO. “We are pleased that our superior coverage, capacity and reliability have significantly contributed to EOL’s success. It is yet another proof of the added value of our unique and powerful beamforming technology to wide area coverage urban and rural deployments.”
